How To Start Making Beats (10 Things to Do) for Beat Makers



Becoming a Beat Maker, I am going to tell you is easy. It's getting into the mindset that you take it as a business/brand. Getting started, simply pick a DAW and stick with that DAW. I am not going to tell you what is best that is up to you. Learning everything about your craft starts with research. I know, I know what you are asking yourself. Do I need to learn Music Theory? Hell, Yes you do. I am not going to be one of these tricksters that want to sell you guru packages. Look it's your craft learn as much as you can that will make you better. That goes for marketing. arrangements, promotion, daw selection, video, and so on you get the point. Make yourself knowledgeable of everything and anything dealing with making music. I am telling you, it will make you stand out in rooms. 

So you want to be a Beat Maker or Music Producer?

Let's make this clear this is not a know-it-all-based Blog nor do I care what most think, lol. So let's break this down. 

1. Get you a DAW that fits You and Your PC. (You do not need Protools unless that is what you want.

2. Learn your DAW peoples. Study the Shortcut Keys first, and adjust to what you can easily remember for your most-used shortcuts. *A MUST FOR NEW BEAT MAKERS*

3. Watch Tutorials! On Youtube, you will find a gang of producers that show you how to use DAWs. Find one that is easy for you to understand and it makes sense what they are doing. Avoid those that show you how to make beats in 5 mins. Dig into the Hour Or Longer videos so you can see the real process. 

4. Network in your Area with a Local Producer or Beat Maker. *I think by now you all should know the differences* Think of it like mentorship or internship at a Fortune 500 company. Soak it all up.

5. Link Up with a local rising star. A-Yo if your man can't rapper or mc do not link up with them and waste your time. Make them security or a manager if they smart enough, Now, the local talent is all around you it's your cousin, teacher, co-worker, or whoever. This is the person you want to learn to build beats with, Two reasons I will explain, Follow the Blog for more. 

6. Learn Marketing and Promotion, and learn it for your Demographic or Audience you are targeting *GEM* You're welcome! This is major know how you are selling to *Artists*. Know what type of people will attract to your personality or aura. Merch as well just throwing this in now but will be a separate section since I do it as well.

7. Learn to be your own one-man-band. Be your Manager, Engineer, DJ, Cheerleader, Pastor, Lawyer, and yeah you get the point. Not saying to get a law degree unless that's your goal. I am saying be able to handle all your business in-house just you. Until you build your all-star team(s). 

8. Give Your Beats Away For Free... Yep, I said It Give Your Beats Away For Free until you feel you are at a reasonable point in your career that you are comfortable charging. Now do not go giving your beats to wack ass rappers. Network with top artists that you admire and respect. Build those networks. People that will elevate you higher. 

9. Start to think about services you can offer to supplement income (a side hustle). Do not go all crazy like I did try to do too many things and burn out. Start slow and grow into one thing and expand if another service comes from the first, but stop there until you have it running for you. 

10. Start Putting Out Music and this list is not in any kind of order but I would find out what order is best for you. Plan that shit out, and it's ok to change a plan in the middle of it. It is called Strategizing,

Gain Staging for FL Studio Users. Hello all my producer friends out there. I wanted to share this tip with you all called Gain Staging. I remember when I first started to learn to mix it was a pain and time-consuming. Who wants to sit for hours mixing a song, but I learned this was what I wanted to do to be good at it. So curious to know what gain staging is let me tell you, a gain stage refers to any point in a production where you can control the volume level of a device or track. Gain staging is the process of managing all of these volume levels within a project to achieve the cleanest mix possible. Who doesn't want a clean final mix right? Step 1 Adjust your levels if they're not already to default. You do this in the Mixer and the Channel Rack for each Track by Right-Clicking and choosing "Reset". Do it now or regret it later!
